Biography
Yeung Yam is the Director of the CUHK Shenzhen Research Institute and a Research Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering at CUHK. He is also the Master of the Lee Woo Sing College at CUHK since July 2024. Yeung Yam is a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE). His research interests span AI, surgical robotics, computational control, and smart manufacturing. He is actively involved in two CUHK InnoCenters at HKSTP, serving as Principal Investigator for the Centre for Perceptual and Interactive Intelligence (CPII) and the Multi-Scale Medical Robotic Center (MRC). Since 2019, Professor YAM has led the CUHK Jockey Club AI-for-the-Future Project. Additionally, he heads two HKSAR Education Bureau projects focused on mainstreaming AI education and teacher training for secondary schools. The AI curriculum developed under his leadership will be taught in all secondary schools in Hong Kong starting September 2024. Yeung Yam has held several leadership positions at CUHK, including Chairman of the Department from 2004 to 2011 and Interim Dean of the Faculty of Engineering in 2018. Yeung Yam received his bachelor degree in Physics from CUHK, and his M.Sc. and Sc.D. degrees in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Before joining CUHK, he was a member of the Technical Staff in the Control Analysis Research Group at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, CA, USA.
